About Us
The Foundation is a non profit 501(c)3 organization that invests its revenues back into its buildings (rather than making a profit). It is a major asset to any community where it owns property, because it continually improves its property over time through reinvestment.
Our partner organization, the Ecker Center, provides mental health professionals who help the residents with:
- Case management
- Medications monitoring
- Running support groups
- Planning occasional recreational activities
- Helping to find health care
Studies have shown that safe and secure housing is a key element in the ongoing recovery process for people with mental illness, which helps then avoid expensive hospitalizations and concentrate on their recovery process.
Poverty is a problem for people with mental illness. Many rely on Social Security Disability payments. The average payment is about $650 a month. That entire amount may only cover rent in the Elgin area leaving no money left for food and other expenses. The Foundation provides modest, safe housing at a rate they can afford. This reduces homelessness as well as the use of tax supported police, paramedic and court services that are called upon when people with severe mental illness becom psychotic.
